Slice of life…

January 30, 2007

Since I started this blog I have been viewing the world differently. All the funny things that happen in our house are now being translated into words in my head- how could I write about this one, I think…This really is rather a liberating way to think. It calls your attention to so much more of the positive- I don’t want my blog to be full of idle complaints- of which, of course, there are plenty… So this is a nice way to focus on the good- or at least the interesting…Here is the view right now… Caroline is standing at the kitchen sink wearing only  her underwear, making “bubble baths” in her sippy cups. She is wearing her underwear after two regular outfit changes and a change into her pink leotard for a dance party. Katherine is sitting in her highchair eating like crazy despite being awake most of last night with a high fever- I guess they do say, feed a fever! And I am writing at my lap top while all this goes on… I have been encouraged by many in this fantastic writing workshop that I am currently taking , to write when the kids are around so write I am… I like it and I don’t feel negligent- well maybe a little but not as much as before. One of the other participants in the group talked about the concept of kids learning what they see- do we want our kids to remember us doing the dishes or do we want them to remember us reading and writing- well to me, this is a no brainer so write, write, write!!!

Silly singing cat

January 27, 2007

Ok- yet again, I am starting to write this moments before I would like to be asleep but this one just has to be shared… Yesterday, Caroline slept until 5:45- late for her these days- we thought maybe we were coming out on the other side of it. At 5am this morning, though, I heard her little voice, calling “Mommy”. I went into her room, covered her up and snuck back into our bed. Of course, moments later she was lying between us. Ok, here’s the funny part… she told us that she had been having a dream about yellow, red and blue M&Ms when she was woken by the silly singing cat. Somehow, a tiny stuffed cat that plays Jingle Bells was in her bed… Really, I’m not sure we can win on this one- even the stuffed animals in our house don’t want to sleep!

It’s going to be ok…

January 25, 2007

Our day began at 4:20am. Caroline has always been an early riser but even for her, this current phase is ridiculous. We are rather at our wits end as she truly seems rested at that time- there seems to be no way to get her to settle back to bed- we have tried everything- I really do think we have tried everything short of meds… So this is how my day began- not pleasantly. Then the day went on and a few things happened that made it all seem ok…

First: When Katherine napped, Caroline and I went outside. Fresh air but cold- I thought though more fresh air during the day could help us at night. So, at one point, I realize that things are pretty funny. Caroline is wearing her raincoat- it is not raining but her coat is yellow- anything yellow is good. She is wearing her bike helmet. She is wearing her shoes on the wrong feet. She drawing a picture while sitting at our patio table. She is sitting on a bar stool that she took out of our shed. Our table is not bar height. She looks a little bit uncomfortable trying to reach down to the table without disturbing her helmet…Thank goodness she is such a funny kid.

Second: We received a package today in a long box. Later in the afternoon- after the raincoat/bike helmet drawing activity- Caroline decorated the box, placed a chair in it and pretended it was an airplane. She even packed drawing supplies “in case I get bored on our way there.” It was just so wonderful to see such old fashioned imagination, alive and well.

By the end of this long day I do think it’s going to be ok…

Calm Day

January 23, 2007

Today we had a calm day. Unfortunately, this really is worth a comment. Caroline’s lack of sleep has really been resulting in some yucky behavior of late… It is noteworthy that she only had a handful of tantrums today. Parenting is just so tough- while acknowledging that sleep is such a big deal in her behavior, Rob and I are also struggling with exactly how we discipline this spirited little thing we call our daughter. At heart, we really want to choose our battles- if we took any other approach, we would be saying no to our persistent, wild, brave child all day long. She, however, is also very smart. She knows that the harder she pushes, the faster we’ve been backing down- fatigue, habit- who knows, but admittedly, I’ve caved way more than I should.  I’m also realizing that children do truly imitate what they are seeing- what you say is irrelevant if it does not match your behavior. I am reading a great book right now called Momma Zen- Karen Maezen Miller has a wonderful chapter on discipline- she talks about how disciplining your children really is about disciplining yourself. I read this last night and it gave me a lot to think about today- maybe it’s why our day was calmer- hum…

Still trying…

January 19, 2007

I am still trying to figure out this whole blog thing… it is requring a bit more computer skill than I seem to have this week. Not that I am normally a computer whiz but sleep derprivation is taking any skill I might otherwise have. The girls are really out to get us this week- on a good week we are getting very little sleep around here and this is a bad week. Katherine had been up a bunch during the night for no apparent reason- the pedicatrian told me this am that she would do her best to find something wrong with her but she had a feeling it was just that she loved being with me! Thanks! She was right, no ear infection, no teething- nothing- just crying- just at night! Caroline is getting up at ungodly hours- like 4:20, seriously- for the day. We normally do 6am which I find disgusting in itself but we have done two 5ams and a 4:20 this week- really more than my body can handle. But… I am dertmined to keep this blog going, so this is going to have to stand for a post today- hopefully I will be more literate by tomorrow…

You know you live in the south when…

January 18, 2007

As I walked out of the grocery store it was snowing- the kind of flurry you need to squint to see. I will admit to getting a little bit excited, telling Katherine to look at her first snow fall and wondering if it was snowing at Caroline’s school. This, though, was about it. I arrived home to the tv I had left on- the Today show is always playing in the background as we get ready in the morning. Dorky, but those guys really do feel like my friends-just need to check in on them every so often- all the more now that Meredith is on- she went to my tiny, little high school in RI- pretty cool… Anyway, to the point- our local guys had broken into regularly scheduled programming to tell us how to drive in the snow- too funny because you can’t even see the snow!!!

First Post

January 18, 2007

This will be my first post at this new site. I’m hoping that I will be more consistent here- cross your fingers! I’m just going to start writing to get in the habit… here goes! It’s really late (for me! Early to bed and early to rise-the rising part not by my choice!) so I’m just going to describe one incredibly gross/funny thing that happened today… While Caroline was peeing, she decided to take a look at it- anyone who has seen this happen knows exactly where the pee goes- it landed right on her pants that were lying on the floor. I went into her room to get her a change of clothes-not gone for more than two seconds-when I heard Caroline screaming, “She’s eating it!” I had left Katherine in the bathroom so I could only imagine what she had found. Well, I didn’t imagine it- she was eating toilet paper out of the not yet flushed toilet- there really is nothing else that I could possibly write to follow that so, good night.
